2009 Contest Concluded

The 2009 NH Liberty Essay Contest has concluded, and judging has taken place.  There was an overall low number of entrants, but among these two stood out as the most deserving of prizes.  Both were well-written, provocative, and demonstrated an appreciation for non-violent resistance and protest.  As a result, only two awards will be given for the 2009 contest.

In addition to the cash prizes, the winning essays will be published state-wide in an upcoming issue of the New Hampshire Free Press.

2009 Contest Announcement

The 2009 contest theme and rules have now been posted under Current Contest.  The theme is Non-violent Resistance and Protest, which is largely inspired by the legacy of Henry David Thoreau.  This legacy continues to influence present day New Hampshire, and included in the recommended reading of the contest is the story of Dave Ridley’s odyssey in civil disobedience.

Note the increase in prize money from the previous contest, with a top prize of $200 for the age 18-21 category and a top prize of $100 for the age 17 and under category.

Winning Essays Published in NH Free Press

The June edition of the New Hampshire Free Press published both winning essays.  These appear on page 7 and 8.  Thanks to Kat and Russell Kanning, who publish the newspaper!

2008 Contest Concluded

The 2008 NH Liberty Essay Contest has concluded, and judging has taken place.  Due to the low number of entrants, I have modified the prize structure.  Instead of providing three prizes in the two age brackets (17 and under and 18-21), I will be giving one first prize for each age bracket.  However, I also increased the prize amount to be $75 and $150, respectively.

The winning essays were well-written, thoughtful, and demonstrated an appreciation for the contest’s theme of human energy and individual freedom.  In addition to the cash prizes, the winning essays will be published state-wide in an upcoming issue of the New Hampshire Free Press.
